The Dicapo Children's Chorus offers children who love to sing, the opportunity to perform in a Carrolle Singe and a fully staged musical each season. Under the supervision of Director, Diane Martindale, the children, who come from public and private schools in the Metropolitan area, are exposed to a rich and varied musical curriculum as well as an authentic theatre environment.

In addition to the concerts and musical revue, Dicapo children often take part in mainstage Dicapo Opera Theatre productions where they work with professional directors, singers, actors and musicians. The children's musical experience is further enhanced by activities such as trips to the theatre, opera and ballet which encourage them to be an interested and appreciative audience. As a result of all these experiences, they learn teamwork and discipline as well as respect for their own talents and those of their fellow performers. Many have gone on to further their drama and musical talents; all have deepened their appreciation of the performing arts.

Performance History

Since Ms. Martindale founded the Dicapo Children's Chorus in 1982, the chorus has performed at Lincoln Center, as guest artists at Alice Tully Hall with "The Little Orchestra Society," Merkin Hall, the Rheinman Theater at New York University, the Long Island Opera, the Long Island Children's Orchestra and the National Grand Opera Company. In addition, they have traveled to Europe to participate in music festivals and have sung at the Rathaus Palace in Vienna.

Registration

Auditions for the Dicapo Children's Chorus take place in September and January. Applicants should be between the ages of eight and sixteen. While no previous formal training is required, children should have a desire to sing, the ability to stay on pitch and a willingness to be part of a cooperative effort. Registration fees are modest and are used to cover the supplies and production costs for the concerts and musical productions. In addition to the registration fee, parents are asked to purchase two tickets to each performance in which their children participate. Weekly rehearsals are held in the Francesca Room of the Dicapo Opera Theatre at 184 East 76th Street, NYC on Friday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with additional rehearsals scheduled as the date of the perfomance nears.
