Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday An ambitious adaptation of Chekhov's celebrated play of the same name, The Seagull by Thomas Pasatieri opens Dicapo Opera Theatre's 2010-11 season. In his three-act opera Pasatieri finds true operatic "gold" in the subtle and at times comic interaction among Chekhov's highly individualistic cast of characters. Pasatieri's The Seagull was given its world premiere at Houston Grand Opera in 1974. In her New York Times review of the 2002 New York premiere, Anne Midgette praised "the sweet, curving surfaces" of the opera's score and Mr. Pasatieri's ability to write themes "sweeping in with deliberate grandeur," an observation that evokes Pasatieri's proven skill as an orchestrator of highly successful Hollywood films. This new production is led by Dicapo's uncommonly gifted Principal Conductor Pacien Mazzagatti and directed by the noted Hungarian director Attila Vidnyánszky, 2009 winner of the prestigious Meyerhold Award. In fall of 2010, Dicapo returns for the third time to the "Armel Opera Competition and Festival with Mezzo and Duna" in Szeged, Hungary, with Mr. Vidnyánszky's production of The Seagull. These performances are broadcast to millions of viewers and are aired in 42 countries throughout Europe. Tickets $50 |
