LILY

her life, his music

Show Synopsis
Lily is a one-woman musical drama about the life fictional cabaret singer, Lily Weiss, as told through the music of Kurt Weill. We begin in Berlin’s cabaret scene of the 1930’s under the backdrop of the impending war. There, we trace her journey of struggle and survival, as she perseveres against the odds.

In pre-war Berlin, Lily’s battle begins at home with Johnny, an abusive lover. After a violent fight, Johnny leaves her beaten and penniless. Lily seeks refuge in the seedy cabarets of Berlin, drowns her sorrows in whiskey and sees prostitution as her only chance for survival. As anti-Semitism rises, Lily’s identity becomes her own worst enemy. She escapes to Paris.

In the brothels of Paris, Lily falls in love with a French prostitute named Jenny. When Jenny sees an opportunity to make a quick profit, however, she reports Lily to a German officer. Heart broken and on the run once again, Lily escapes as a stow-away on a ship bound for America.

Safe, but Isolated and lonely, Lily musters the courage to take control of her own destiny. She takes a chance, and gets a break at a busy Hollywood nightclub. She is a hit. Lily reflects on her experiences and comes to the realization that life, with its pains, misfortunes, and struggles, is precious, and that she is fortunate to have even if for a little while.
