Emile Zola’s passionate novel of adultery and murder are brought to vivid life by American composer Tobias Picker and librettist Gene Scheer. Thérèse Raquin was Zola’s second novel and the controversy caused by its publication moved him to coin the term “naturalism” to describe the foundation of his action. Zola takes the familiar love triangle – an unsuspecting husband, an adulterous wife, her rapacious lover – and makes it ring as true and as bloody as the back pages of today’s tabloids. Dicapo is honored to present the opera’s New York premiere in a version newly revised by the composer.
